Breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) is a procedure for women who want fuller breasts. There are a variety of different factors that can cause women to feel dissatisfied with their breasts. Pregnancy, weight loss, and other genetic malformations are just a few of the reasons that women seek breast augmentation.
Together, you and Dr. Self will determine the type of implants and size that reflect your desired appearance.
Implant size and shape: Breast implants come in many sizes and are filled with saline or silicone gel. Silicone is available for all women over 22 years old. All implants are round in shape, but can have different profiles. There are high, moderate, and low profile implants. These reflect how much projection the implant creates. Dr. Self uses only smooth implants for breast augmentation.
Incision location: The incision is well-hidden underneath the fold of the breast.
Implant placement: The placement of the implant is also a very important decision. Implants can be placed below the chest muscle (submuscular) or above the chest muscle underneath the breast tissue (subglandular). The placement will likely depend on your anatomical shape and desired result.
Breast augmentation procedures generally take 60-90 minutes to complete. Incisions are specifically placed to conceal them and minimize the scar, which is about 4 cm long. When the implant is securely placed, the incisions are sutured. Your breasts will be wrapped in a dressing and special surgical bra. During your consultation with Dr. Self, he will go over all aspects of the augmentation process. Dr. Self and his staff will be there throughout the process to guide support you.
